1989 Cymdeithas Tai Hafan (now known as Hafan Cymru) was founded after a piece of research entitled ´Homes Fit For Heroines´, which was undertaken by founder and now retired Cathy Davies. From this research, Cathy recognised that there was a need to establish a Housing Association to provide homes and ongoing support for women and their children leaving refuge.
Cymdeithas Tai Hafan registered as a charitable Housing Association and successfully acquired a loan to build two housing schemes in Carmarthenshire and Neath.
1990s After recognising that many women had multiple needs as a result of being in an abusive relationship, we widened our remit to include the needs of all women who are vulnerable.
2007 We changed our constitution to also support men experiencing Domestic Abuse, young men and male single parents.
2009 The organisation was renamed Hafan Cymru. Our strapline ‘Preventing Abuse. Promoting Independence’ reflects our passion to save lives and overturn the devastating effects of Domestic Abuse.
