The Spectrum Project
The project is funded by the National Assembly for Wales and aims to educate the youth of Wales about abuse and its consequences. It is intended for young people between 11 and 18 years of age.
The work is primarily carried out in Secondary schools but also takes place in colleges and other youth events.
In addition to raising awareness of abuse amongst young people the Spectrum Project also delivers sessions to teachers and teaching support staff, youth workers, social workers and other interested professionals.
The Resources and Workshops
The Spectrum Pack conforms to the requirements of the Personal and Social Education Framework. It is suitable for all Key Stages across the secondary age range. All the resources are free and bi-lingual.
The Spectrum Pack also contains a session specifically for Year 12/13 pupils which is within the specification of the Welsh Baccalaureate.
The issue of abuse is clearly a subject which needs to be approached in a sensitive manner. To this end it is raised through the use of themed sessions. Each session is age appropriate and intended to promote discussion without prompting pupils to disclose personal experiences. The main themes used are:
- Belonging
- Family
- Relationships
- Conflict
- Rights and Responsibilities
Research shows that the root cause of Domestic Abuse is an imbalance of Power and Control. Therefore the underlying message of each session is the issue of Power and Control within relationships.
Every session includes a discussion around where young people can go for help and support if they feel they need to.
Our Approach
The Spectrum sessions usually last an hour and are run in a workshop style. The aim is to encourage young people to feel supported and confident enough to voice their opinions and to hear the views of their peers.
Team Members
All members of the Schools Liaison Team are trained and experienced teachers and educators. They are also bi-lingual and therefore able to offer sessions through the medium of English or Welsh.
