This can either be physical, sexual, financial and/ or emotional. Many abusers use more than one type of abuse in order to gain power and control, so therefore many of these types of abuse overlap. However in nearly every abusive relationship there will be an element of emotional abuse.
Domestic Abuse effects different people in different ways, however many people who’ve been through it agree that they felt:
- afraid
- they couldn’t do anything right
- they deserved to be hurt or mistreated
- they had to be careful what they said
- they were the crazy one
- emotionally numb or helpless
Someone with an abusive personality will usually display a lot of the following signs most of the time.
- Very Controlling
- Extremely Jealous
- Possessive
- Manipulative/Persuasive
- Easily Insulted
- Overly sensitive
- Aggressive
- Criticise your friends constantly
- Try to turn you against your family
- Try to control your social life
- Checks up on you a lot
- Threatening outbursts
- Pressurise you sexually
- Control your spending
This can include:
- Name calling
- Ignoring
- Shouting
- Making someone feel small in public or private
- Telling someone their stupid, ‘mad’ or insane
- Threatening violence against children , family or pets
- Keeping them away from friends and family
- Not letting someone sleep.
This can include:
- Not allowing someone to have their own money
- Not letting someone work to earn any money.
- Causing someone to lose their job
- Controlling all the money
- Blackmail
- Stealing money
This can include:
- Slapping
- Hitting
- Pushing
- Biting
- Burning
- Kicking
- Using a weapon
- Hair pulling
- Destruction of property
- Harming or killing of pets
- The worst form of abuse is murder
This can include:
- Sexual Jokes
- Insulting, sexual names
- Insulting their sexuality
- Unwanted, inappropriate touching
- Child abuse
- Rape-Having sex without the other persons permission
